Crossing Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento

My latest received SPAM. Haha it's so Funny

Buenos Aires, Dec 5 - 2007 - This was the Morning we had to wake up early. We should cross Rio de la Plata to Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay. All our 3 Alarm Clocks were ON as part of our Risk Management Procedures.

With Boat Tickets, Sightseeing and Lunch Vouchers well checked out we took at Taxi down to the Harbour. That was an easy drive, until we met the morning rush at Avenida Antártida Argentina, which runs parallell to Puerto Madero and the new Buquebus Ferry Terminal.

Checking in on this Ferry Terminal, is very similar as to an International Flight. Passporte, Tickets and Security Control and New Ticket and Passport Check. At least, there were no restrictions on water and perfume etc. In fact, these Day-trips are very popular among the Portenos (as the people of Buenos Aires are called) as they can buy tax free perfumes, wine, liquer, tobacco, jewelleries, cloths, candy's, electronics etc. The trip takes about 3 hrs each way, unless go go by the Hydrofoil (50 minutes). We were not in a hurry.

On the Ferry, you will have a seat, similar to what you are used to in an airplane, but more space. There are cafeterias for simple food and beverages. On the deck is a snack bare serving all kinds of beverages, snacks and ice cream. But, it was closed the day we crossed, due to rain. Lucky us. The option was to stroll around Buenos Aires a rainy day. That would have hurt my wallet and credit cards, travelling with two women.

Buenos Aires Skyline - Click to enlarge

Crossing Rio de la Plata. The water is filled with mud and sediments from the great river Parana (incl side rivers like Paraguay, Uruguay and Iguazu). The river delta is growing 46.5 meters a year. Click and you will discover an amazing growth;D

Ingelin, still on board. Too cold water for her to swim (used to Florida)

On Top Deck a rainy Day

First sight of Uruguay

We arrived in heavy rain. No rain coats brought, optimistic as we allways are. Buses were waiting for us. (Luckely I found the Vouchers) To bring us to the Lunch restaurant.

- It will stop raing when we starts the Sightseeing after lunch, I proclaimed.
- Ha ha, Ingelin and Anna replied

Then we had Lunch, in a cellar, originally part of a large brick barn.

After lunch: Sightseeing by bus. Had it stopped raining? As allready told the ladies: Yes.

National Flower (Flag?)
Colonia del Sacramento, Some facts:
Built in Portuguese style of houses and cobblestoned streets, the historic portion of Colonia is reminiscent of old Lisbon. Winding streets and colorful houses are laid out in a pattern different from Spanish colonial cities, and a delight to explore. The historic quarter, Barrío Historico, on a small peninsula jutting out into the river, was named a
UNESCO heritage site in 1995.

And pictures (all taken by ourselfes):

Very relaxing in Old Town - Here the Entrence with sleeping German Sheppard
Some scenes from the Historical, Old Town. Let the pictures talk for themself. It's Wordless Wednesday:

Have you seen my ladies lately?

Flower covered street

Would you believe it, when the walking part of the Sightseeing did start, what did we see? The Sun and Blue Sky.

Flowering Tree

Hey, where is my Cellphone?

Cheese

and cappuccino

New Country - New Shopping. . . .

Papa, very well trained to find a place to rest while the ladies goes shopping (The banking system did not work, so it ended with nothing new in the shopping bag)

Did someone had a huge barbecue? No, the Whale was washed ashore.

After 25 years of Marriage

And when we returned to the Ferry? It started raining and blowing again, and the temperatur dropped from 25 C (77 F) to below 10 C (50 F).

We did buy some small things in the TaxFree, but the banking/creditcard connection failed.
Two minutes before arrival in Buenos Aires, who came running after me but the very servicemined cashier: We have connection, you can pick up the goods. Hurray.

Well off the Ferry, star clair sky in Buenos Aires. We had dinner at an outdoor restaurant around Midnight. Perfect timing. And a wondeful day. (PS. It was Ingelin's Country #63)

Beautiful pictures Tor! I wish I'd been with Anna to shop! LOL

@Joy Des Jardins: I'm utterly sorry you are not able to see the photos. I'm not capable of sorting out why. May be it's the browser (we have tested both Firefox and IE on a wireless connection with 2 different PC's), it might have something to do with buffering capacity or line speed.

@Maribeth: TG - you could see the pictures. Yeah, we are planning to return to Buenos Aires, that's for sure. Why not join?
btw. We have at least 6 more posts coming up in the weeks to come, also from shopping (women only - haha)

I wonder if blogger has some sort of problem. At first I could see the first photos only, then I went over to IE where I could see nonoe of the photos and then back in FF again I couldn't see any of the photos. Besides that the page is loading very slow.

No problem at other sites. Weird.

Tor....Me Too...No Pictures! Hmmmm. I will try to come back later, and maybe by that time the Pictures will show up!
All I get are those red "X"s and 'Show Picture' doesn't do it...!

Sorry I wrote about lots of films you are unfamiliar with...But, they are what I watched! People in The U.S. probably know some of them....But not in Norway, yet! (lol)

I see the ladies have trained you well and you rest instead of going crazy with all the shopping , lol.
Mr Mar has taken the Buquebus from Buenos Aires to Montevideo but he has never taken any pictures (booooo)
Very interesting shots, particularly the stranded whale!
You sure had a great time with the ladies of your heart!!

Happy New Year, Tor and Anna!

I loved the photos, especially the one of the jacaranda flowers on the cobblestones.

Pity about the shopping...I'd have been most upset if I couldn't use my credit card!

A beautiful trip you did with your ladies! I didn't know you could begin with 25°C and come to 10°!!! But you are a viking and you can resist! I can't say the same!!! Nature and architecture are beautiful! We have the same flowers here. Ces fleurs produisent un fruit orange. Souvent les gens les utilisent comme brise-vue sur les grillages des jardins.
Thanks to share your marvelous trip with us!

Oh, I'm glad it finally was OK. The photos was worth waiting for though! Sounded like a bit disappointment with the shopping - at least for the ladies, maybe not for you ;-)

Well, you just have to let this post be up in top a bit longer then :-)

Looks like a wonderful excursion. I didn't know about the growth. Very interesting.

I wonder if it's about the same with the weather in Argentina as it is in Paraguay: rain about every 8th day year round? That's why it was so green in Paraguay. It only rained that 8th day, so they have the PERFECT weather conditions according to me :-)

Wonderful pictures of a part of the world I don't know. There is still one missing for me - the first sight of Uruguay (perhaps I am the only one who can't see it). Such a wonderful 25 year anniversary trip.

Why thank you, dear Tor. I am glad you have enjoyed the show of some of my favorite photos of 2007 as much as I have enjoyed the photos of your trip. The colors are all incredible-- the flowers, buildings, etc. Amazing.

A perfect way to celebrate 25 years for such a lovely couple. :-)

Big hugs to you and Anna from me.

I'm glad I came back as the pictures shows now and that encrises the joy of reading your travel report very much!

It was actually very interesting 'experience' to read this before (without) and after (with pictures). Not that I can't imagine, but it kind of filling in the gap.

Thanks for taking your time and sharing!

Now I start to realize what a wonderful trip you have made ! It's only a pity that it rained that day but anyway you could see and imagine sunshine !
I noticed that pictures are uploaded quicker when you reduce the pixel size ! My pictures usually have around 3000 pixels and when I reduce it to 800 suddenly it works very fast. Then you can go to bed earlier then 6 when I just get up, lol !

January 11, 2008 6:46 am
Blogger TorAa said...

@Gattina: The pictures did upload quick enough, and they were visible the first 30 minutes. Then they suddenly became invisible; It seems to have been a Blogger problem, which caused me to upload all the pictures one more time. Searching among 100's of photos takes time.

I laughed over setting 3 alarm clocks (YES, to be sure!), and the dog lying in the open thoroughfare like that, as we saw in Italy. And I especially liked how you told the story of the sun and the shopping. You are so good, Tor! :) Happy anniversary again.

Great pics! I know Argentina pretty well, we've been there in 2001-02, part of a long six months trip to Latin America. We go in Buenos Aires the day the big riots started (the peso had dropped dramatically). I loved the atmosphere, your pictures remind me of the good time!

Didn't have a chance to go to Uruguay though.

The ferry seats look awesome! Much more comfortable than most planes nowadays...
