Wordless Wednesday - April 1 - 2009: Brick by Brick
Some years ago, the local authorities made the descission to construct a Subway/Metro/Underground/U-Bahn. One of the lines happened to be projected right under Karch Haus.
With the soil there is, it was very risky, to put it mildly. The whole building could fell down.
Besides, the city of Düsseldorf has regulations that conserves buildings like this one.
So what to do with Karch Haus?
They picked it down, brick by brick. Each brick was given an unique identification number. Then transported away. The Metro was constructed and the soil was returned to it's orginal state.

Then, they returned each brick and reconstructed the whole building to it's original form and shape. I do applaude such an effort to take care of what's to be taken care of culture and Arcitecture and City image.

Project leader? Here he is. My regular readers might have an idea?
(There are several methods to conserve historical monuments in cases like this. Each case is unique. In some cases a freezing technique may be used, but in this case, that was not the safest)
