ABC - U

This is for U - Comment in your own Language - dette er for deg, kommenter på ditt eget morsmål.
The Letter U is often used as a prefix both in English and Norwegian.
Mostly in English combined as "Un" like in "Undone" - "ugjort" or "Unfinnished" - "uferdig" or "Undetermined" - "ubesluttet". As you, my dear readers have allready discovered: In English these words starts with "Un" and in Norwegian with a simple "U".
But not all - alle

As Usual I start with:

The Letter “U”
“U,” the fifth and last (in English) of the true vowels, symbolizes collecting.

People wearing this letter in their name are talented enough to do anything they can imagine. Their imagination plays ... read more

The origin od the letter U? Check here.

I'll bring you some examples, before I will be more or less unavailable - utilgjengelige. Or may be unbeatable - uslåelig. haha
It's Vacation time. U know;-))

Let's start in Oslo - This is the old University - universitet - in downtown Oslo. Inside there is fantastic frescos painted by Edvard Munch. I had my Psycho lessons here. In the Aula. Where I also joined several classical music concerts. Before the new Concert Hall in Oslo were finnished.

Turning around from the University, we are still in Oslo. And here you see "Urban" - "urbant" life - liv in the Norwegian Capital.

Before I bring you far away from Norway, I'll show you how some parts of our Summer House (sommerhus) looked like "Unfinnished" - "uferdig". You can't image how steep it us unless been there.

It's about time to bring you, my dear readers, on a journey. The letter " U" ain't easy, "unless - unntatt" you are from USA - USA. Photo taken on July 4, in SW Michigan, Eaux Claire - I had to explain to the locals the name of the Township orginates from French and means Clearwater. I will not comment on their reactions.

It's a long way from USA to South America. Here you see the national Flower of Uruguay - Uruguay. Same colours as is in the country's National Flag.

Norwegians love to walk in the Nature and the Mountains. Maybe it's unexpected that I bring you here?
This tiny village, Uspallata (Mendoza District in Argentina), is where you have to apply for a permission to climb the highest point in the Americas, and the highest Mountain outside Asia.
So now you know where to adress, when thinking about climbing to 6.954 meters, when snow over 7.000 meters.

Continue reading and I'll bring you closer.

Here you see Aconcagua, when we first time did see this Majestic Mountain.
What does this photo have to do with the letter "U"? It's simply unhabitated - ubebodd.
We were there in April. That's not the best time of year. It was blowing and blowing and snowing higher up. So we gave up, even to base camp. Best time of year is early January.

Sometimes we have to admit: It's better to go "Under - under" than over a Mountain. This photo, scanned from a slide, is the Argentian side of the main road between Argentina and Santiago de Chile. For your information: The old railroad and road have both been destroyde by stone sledges. Caused by Snow and Eartquakes.

PS. We will be on Vacation for some weeks. I'll try to comment and post whenever I have an Internet connection. Cat-sitters are in place, when we visit Family and Friends south of Norway.

ABC #16 - P

New ABC week. And P is the challenge.

Same object in both English and Norwegian beginning with the letter P.

Difficult ? There are simple lingivistic reasons for English and Norwegian similiraties. Just continue reading- If you don't have time, just bookmark/Favourite?

First about the Letter P
“P” represents the rhythms of life. This includes knowledge, which gives this person a keen insight.

Bright and clever, these people find a way to get what they want in this world. Not only are they shrewd but they have the intelligence to back up whatever
read more

Origin of P is according to Wikipedia

The ABC-P challenge: Yes, it was very difficult.

Not the way you might think.

The challenge was how to limit the number of similarities.

Don't go wild, take it as a "lesson" ;-)) Or Summer School;)

Lot's of Photos this week will compensate for next weeks ABC-Q. OK?

(A very sad story)

If you think about Paris, Penis, Podagra, Pisa, Patriot, Portugal, Parasites, Perfume, Party, Pentagon, Politician , Prune, Prolog, Program etc etc... think otherwise. Translate here

See my Point – poeng - 12? This is a Pair - par. In many countries also accepted in real life, not only in Card-playing. I could of course presented a King and Queen as a Pair - par. Apparently something is missing in our deck of Cards. LOL. Maybe Permantly - permanent.

(Summer Lesson #1:

Many English words derives from Latin, like this one above. Others have the orgin from Germanic. That's one of the reasons there are so many common words and expressions)

Here we go with something that did have an immense importance for Norwegians in the 1700 h

.undreds (18th Century)

Potatoes – poteter - patatas. I think most of my readers do know potatoes or patatas origins from the Andes in South America. Some hundred years ago the Norwegian population at most survived due to the Potatoes. Every Sunday, the Priests talked about the value of the Potatoe.

They were called Potatoe Priest - Potet prest

In Norway to day, there are more than 20 different types to be bought. For different uses and meals. Those above are well down in the soil in our Summer Garden.

Also important is Rosa’s (one our Cats) favourite dry-food from Purina..
I cannot beleive how that big company can present such confusional web-sites. When searching for Cat food, they present a photo of a Dog.

Hm, many people are dependent of Pills - piller and fell asleep with their head on a Pillow - pute.

Sometimes calculations can be of value.

I do some research my self and then is Percent – prosent of importance. Who said what in a Quest. Understand?

Please now be prepared for some trips far away from Norway.

Talking about myself, I’m a Papa – pappa - Here with daughter in Key West, Florida.

We have been to Parati – Paraty in Brasil. The old town, at the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The village is build in Portuguese - Portugisisk colonial style. (Photo scanned from Slide)

Here you see the Pier - pir in Puerto Montt in Chile. We were there in 1994. (Photo scanned from Slide)
This is the main
Fishing Town in Chile. Situated about 1000 km (630 miles) south of Santiago.

Go down from Santiago by bus. You will not believe the Comfort and Service. Then rent a Car and

discover an amazing country on your way back to santiago. And do not forget to respect the indigenous: Mapuches. They have never been conquered by the White Man.

And we did visit a Volcano in Northern Chile, on the border between Chile and Bolivia – Parinacota. 6348 masl or 20,827 feet – I must say: If you have the chance, go up there. You’ll never forget. At least to Lago Chungara. You will see Birds and Animals that only lives here.

Well, lets go back to Norway:

Something unexpected: Palms – palmer - Real or fake? You must visit.
Or read Mrs Lifecruiser post about the visit

As we do not have a bidet we use Paper – papir;-))
When time, you can read "History of Paper"

As last week, I’ll end up with something pleasant:

The Post Office - Postkontor of Santa Clause in Dröbak, Norway. Open Year around.

(If you send me your post address to my private e-mail address, you can expect a X-Mas card)

PS. Are you aware how many meanings "post" do have? If not, read more - Interesting. Also when thinking English - Norwegian.

Lots of pictures posted this week as well. There could have been many, many more.

You will without doubt find more here at ABC – in Words and Photos – ABC i ord og bilder.

I wish my Norwegian readers that this weekend will leave for Summer vacation the very best.

Have a great and well deserved time.

PS. It might be of interest where you are going this Summer.

We plan to go, by Car, to Southern France. An International Blogger Meeting. Hurray.

High - keep calm - it's HIGH

HIGH,
What a challenge.
High by drugs, high as is . whatever- My choice is a mix: Beeing high by the lack of Air, Travel and Nature.

First time we went to Northern Chile - in 1995 - we had to explore the new snowless road connection between Chile and Argentina (ending in Antofogasta at the Pacific Coast - we did drive some hours on the Argentinian side in December 2007 - Silver Wedding - but not higher than 4.170 meter).
You might know that Argentina and Chile is divided by the mighty Andes. In the South very rainful. In the North: Dryest place on Planet Earth. The Atacama desert.

We descided to drive up to the highest point of the road. (The local map said 5400 meters above Sea Level - 17716.5 Feet) We did see Birds ( Pink Flamingoes in Bolivia, so close we were to the frontier, at the Green Lake) and other animals that only lives in this arrid area. That will be another post - need to scan

I took some photos and fainted due to lack of Air.
(Photos taken at an elevation over than 5000 meters a-s-l
Volcanoes and mountains around here is from 5800 to 6200 m a s -l
- Can you breath? Yess - but don't run)
But, as you know, I'm still allive. One thing I did learn:

Respect the:
HIGH

Boats on Mondays - September 3 - 2007

Boats has been important for humans for thousands of years. As a mean of transportation - on rivers, lakes, channels and across the seven seas. And for fishing and hunting.

These boats I captured in 1994 - In Angelmo just outside the town of Puerto Montt 1050 km south of Santiago de Chile. As you can see it's lots of activities going on - here in Chiles "Fishing Capital". The Fish buyers are allready on board starting to trade the last Catch.
The quality of the picture is not the best - it's a scan from a dirty slide.
Mrs Lifecruiser has in important question this Monday: What ship goes to The Secret Island?

Cybercruise memories - Chile and Argentina 1993

Easter 1993 was the first time we did visit Chile and Argentina. Ten days. Most people thought we were crazy. When travelling from Norway to Chile, you had to stay away for at least 4-5 weeks, we were told. Well, we have been there 4 times since. On Vacation. Those who said 4-5 weeks, are still waiting for their chance to go. If they ever do it. 2 1/2 weeks are our record. So far. Beeing as far north as possible (North of Arica) down to south of Puerto Montt - the fishing capital.

Carpe diem, we say. My dust blowing in the wind does not give me an experience of a Lifetime. So, I travel alive. So here we are, telling tales (Anna, Mats and me in the Pyrenees, Massif Malladeta, Spain). What we tell is the thruth.

Hope my readers will excuse me for posting more than 1 photo. I do as much as my back allow me to for the moment, and we will be away the rest of the Easter. And I'm off to my good friend in Vence, also visting another friend in Menton. Cross my fingers for my grrrr back.

PS. All pictures are scanned from slides... (and not "touristique")
Since we are on a cruise, and this is down memory lane, let's start with this picture of Anna and a Japanese, young woman, that in 1993 travelled alone in South America for nearly 3 months. As good backbackers at that time, we helped her to have a seat on the bus to Santiago to Chile. Over the high Andes. This photo is taken outside the Argentinian customs. We learned a lot during our bus-trip to Santiago.

The old Spa at Puente del Inca, Argentina, on the main road between Santiago and Mendoza. The colours are as they are. It's really hot springs with lot's of healthy minerals. Many Aconcagua (highest mountain in the Americas) expeditions starts/ends here. Be aware, if you stay overnight here, the bus companies charge you full price Mendoza-Santiago. And you need to walk upwards about 45 minutes to catch up the bus another day. May have changed since 1993. Our first Pampmas beef was eaten here. In Mendoza. More or less demostated by an earthquake in 1964 (?). The city is beautiful. If you have the slightest interest in Winetasting. End of February is recommended. We had to stay waiting for 4 hours for Customs in Chile. At more than 2800 meters above sealevel (abouit 9000 feet). It was chilly. Around freezing point. Easter 1993 it was thousands upon thousands that went from Argentina down to Chile, Viña del Mar and North, to have a seaside Vacation.
Our first meeting with the Pacific Ocean. Chile. We came there by accident. Went wrong around Santiago. But we would not have missed this view. Llo-Llo. South-West of Santiago.Along the memory lane: Do you remember the "street-photographers"? Instant photos. This one is taken inside Mercado Central in Santiago de Chile. If you happens to be in Santiago, don't miss it. And have lunch there. We had an unforgetable lunch. And a service out of this planet.;))Santiago de Chile was founded here, at Plaza des Armas (1541 - if I recall). It was a hard time both for the Spanish immigrants and the locals - for many years to come. The Plaza is very beautiful and is situated - as you should understand - in the "old" town. We both feel at home in Santiago de Chile. And need to go back. On our Silver-wedding perhaps.

Some Easter memories - shared with you - fellow cruisers. Hope you enjoyed.
